Why I’m Getting A Dev Job

The last three weeks have been absolutely crazy. I had family in town for graduation on the 10th, and then had them come back for the newest addition to our family on the 20th, Little Bryton. Finally the dust has settled and I’m now deep in the job hunt.

One of the questions I’m getting a lot is why I want to code when I have a strong background in business. In the future, I’ll just send them a link to this post.

I’ve always known I want to build and launch startups. When it came time to choose an undergrad major I figured that business was what wannabe entrepreneurs studied. An undergrad in business led me to get and MBA because I wanted a graduate degree that would give me the maximum amount of time to focus on a startup. Not that an MBA is easy, just that my business background made many things a review and the program at CU allowed me to get class credit for building a business.

Unfortunately, that business failed and I had to decide my next move.

About a year into the MBA it became very apparent that the best tech entrepreneurs have hardcore coding or design skills (there are some exceptions). I’ve done the coding and design for all my startups and for several clients, but most of it has been learned as I go. Now I’m looking to take my skills to the next level, particularly my coding skills.

So, I have 3 to 5 years to become an expert. Who knows where my career will take me in the future, but at least I know my next step.
